Each of us has a personal story to tell – A story about who we are and what matters to us. Lifestyle photography is the genre of photography that captures the real life stories of people, their relationships, their emotions and real events in their lives. This stands in contrast to Fashion photography which relies on near-physical perfectness of its subjects and artificially created backgrounds. Lifestyle photography combines the storytelling approach of photo journalism with the artistic finesse of fine art photography.
The skill of a lifestyle photographer lies in his ability to tell visual stories. Just capturing candid images does not qualify as a story. A story has a plot and a set of characters which for a lifestyle photographer are his subjects. The plot can be multifarious- a typical day in the life of a family, personal leisure activities and interests, a happy occasion or showing real nuggets of one’s life. Be it anything, the theme of any lifestyle photography shoot is always marinated in realism and shot in an authentic environment. Supplementing this reality with fine portraiture gives lifestyle photography a contemporary art flavour. Most lifestyle shoots are a balance of posed and candid images contingent on what the photographer wants to convey.
I have been shooting as a lifestyle photographer for over a year now and it’s the storytelling angle that excites me about this genre of photography. Last May I started a lifestyle photography project ‘One Life, One Passion’. My idea is to create visual narratives of real people who are passionate about something- adventure, music, creative arts, social enterprise and anything of consequence. Through this project, I have the opportunity to meet inspiring and self-motivated individuals and I consider this an added advantage of being a lifestyle photographer. I compliment my visual stories with written narratives thus trying to offer a complete storytelling experience to the viewer.
